Overview (TL;DR)

There’s no wrong way to prompt in Midjourney. If you love your images, then it doesn’t matter what words you use or what your prompting style is. That said, if your prompts are not creating what you have in mind, you can check your prompt with these troubleshooting steps for each Midjourney version.

How should I prompt in v7?

</aside>

Our prompting mantra for v7: Want to see it? Say it unambiguously.

With v7.0’s improved prompt adherence, the model is more responsive than ever. If something’s missing, it might just be waiting for you to spell it out. Be very specific. In v7, traditional or standard prompting (as opposed to Conversational Mode prompting) does a great job understanding a wider range of prompting styles than previous models. That means:

🎨 Your prompts can be open-ended…

Midjourney v7.0 is well-equipped to help you create intriguing and entertaining images.

This guy and his dog look exactly alike.

🎨 or completely creative…

Midjourney v7.0 is responsive to creative use of words and non-words. Explore, discover!

🎨 or incredibly specific…

Midjourney v7.0 can handle many more subjects and/or details than previous versions.

A blue-eyed man with a frown on his face is standing at the beach. The ocean is made of purple wine. The man is holding a fat black cat in his arms. The man has a black umbrella. The man is wearing a green sweater and yellow shorts. The weather is stormy. A big blue bird flies across the grey sky. There is an ice cream stand in the distance. An orange beach ball floats in the purple water. A seagull stands nearby wearing a little sailor’s hat, which is pretty cute.

As a rough estimate, we think it can handle 5 subjects easily, and up to 7 with careful prompting. We think it can handle at least 20 individually specified details.
