Overview (TL;DR)

How can you create a 3D VR Chat Avatar from your own Midjourney character design? This tutorial walks you through a cool workflow developed by community member @mabus_tiefsee, using a variety of AI tools currently available.

This tutorial involves a rigorous workflow that flows back and forth between Midjourney and various other external AI, graphic, and 3d modeling softwares! It assumes you have some working knowledge of Midjourney v8.2 already. Remember: this is community-created content, and no supplemental software mentioned here is officially endorsed or provided by Midjourney.

A • Design your character in Midjourney

</aside>

  1. Create an Image: experiment with character designs until you have one that you like, using a tall image aspect ratio that can show most or all of the body. Choose one image that you will use for the rest of the process. This part is up to you!
  2. Turn it into a video (Animate): you’ll want the character to stand in an “A” Pose for better rigging later. Suggested prompt used in this example: zooming out, walking, "are you not entertained" posing --motion high --video 1
  3. Choose one animation, and capture the single frame that provides the best full pose.

step 1: character design

step 1: character design

step 2: animate to “A” pose

step 2: animate to “A” pose

step 3: select best frame

step 3: select best frame

  1. Optional step: if needed, touch up this image (the one frame you saved from the video) with Midjourney’s Editor feature. Sometimes the frame will have blurriness or artifacts from the animation that you’ll want to fix before moving on.

step 4: final midjourney image after editing / touch up

B • Separate the character’s figure into workable parts

</aside>

The next step involves turning the Midjourney image into a 3D model, but first you’ll need to separate the character into workable parts. AI Image-to-3D generators can't focus on the head details and body details at the same time, so if you leave the character whole, it will produce uncanny valley effects.

  1. Separate the head from the body using any standard graphics or photo editing tool (for example: MS Paint, Gimp, Photoshop). Let the neck stay with the torso/body. You’ll end up with two image files.
  2. Save the body image for 3d model generation. (STEP C)
  3. Save the head image for another step in Midjourney. (STEP D)
